This course will help you build online instructional resources that engage learners and help achieve their academic goals.

It's focused on hands-on learning driven by your own particular needs and classroom situations. We'll be collaborating and creating, not just reading or studying.

Target audience: U.S. K-12 educators who are teaching online or blended currently or plan to be doing so imminently

Prerequisite knowledge/skills:

  • Be a U.S. K-12 teacher or administrator
  • Have some experience with online or blended learning, including basic skills in the platform of your choice (e.g. Moodle, Blackboard, wikis, P2PU, etc.)
  • Have solid knowledge of your grade level and subject curriculum and standards
  • Possess intermediate technology skills (including basic web editing skills and use of some web 2.0 tools)
  • Have a willingness to collaborate with others in this course
     

Course dates: Sept. 26 - Nov. 6, 2011 (6 weeks)

Course commitments:

Participants should be willing to:

  • Develop at least one learning module for an online or blended class you are or will be teaching (This can be done in the platform of your choice. Hosting will need to be arranged in advance.)
  • Share, learn, and teach as a part of this peer learning course
  • Commit to spend 4-6 hours a week on this course (Most of the time will be asynchronous, but there will be 2-3 optional webinars. They will also be archived for later viewing.)
     

Course goals:

After this course, participants will:

  • Be able to develop an online instructional unit in the platform of their choice
  • Think about how learning goals, differentiated resources and strategies, learner independence, engagement, and assessment can all complement each other in online or blended learning
  • Know where to access existing, open-licensed resources to build your courses

Course developer/facilitator:

Karen Fasimpaur is an ed tech coach, focused on technoloyg integration, curriculum, open resources, and blended learning. Prior to this work, Karen was an educational multimedia producer, a textbook developer, and a teacher.

In other pursuits, Karen is a writer, cook, and carpenter. She lives in a remote part of the desert southwest in an off-the-grid (solar) house.
