I have learned several things about myself in this class. One thing I learned is that I wasn't as technological and "modern" as I thought I was. I thought being modern just meant using computers and smart boards - I didn't realize all the programs that were out there that could benefit the student and teacher equally. For example, Scratch is really awesome and I think could be used in any math class for any age. GeoGebra is another PLN that I never knew about prior to this class that is really useful for students and teachers. I guess I always had a more "old fashioned" approach to math and didn't realize it. This class really helped open my eyes to all the useful and advanced programs there are out there.
Another thing that I learned is how reliant I am on hearing other people's opinions and ideas. Not only did this class open my eyes to blogs, but it also gave me the opportunity to interact with people directly through Twitter chats and enabled me to hear my fellow students' ideas and opinions. I used to be more of an independant worker but this class helped me realize how useful it is to exchange ideas with other people.
A third very impactful thing that I learned from this class is the importance of integrating art into teaching math. I didn't realize how many senses artwork stimulated until I explored it further in this class. I always knew that visual learning was important, it was one of the things I emphasized in the very first week of this class. However, this class helped me realize the importance of art, specifically, and how many different artistic approaches there were to learning math.
I definitely think that these three things will influence math tasks with my children in the future and with my preschool class right now. I think these three realizations are important. Due to this class, I realized the importance of integrating modernization into my math tasks. As the world technologically evolves, kids have to keep up with it. These evolutions make learning math more exploratory. I will also make sure that my future math tasks include group discussions and sharing of ideas, now that I have learned how helpful these interactions are. I will also be sure to include as much art as possible! There are SO MANY art-based math projects that can be done, all of which help the child accomplish the math task in a more creative and thought-provoking way!
