Challenge supporting the use of materials from the Beginning Unit of OpenFiction Project.
This challenge supports the use of materials found in the Beginning Unit of the OpenFiction Project, a free and open introductory fiction writing course
The goals of this challenge are to:
• become familiar with the OpenFiction Project course materials and how they are structured
• learn techniques for generating short story ideas, and
• begin writing the short story that you will finish by the end of your work with the OpenFiction Project materials.
- 1. Review the syllabus for the OpenFiction Project materials View and Discuss tOFP materials were designed for a distance learning course; the syllabus will give you a good idea of how the course was structured.
- 2. Choose a selected story View and Discuss Find a story by a published writer that you'd like to examine in great depth throughout your work with tOFP materials.
- 3. Complete the "Story Statement" critical reflection View and Discuss This will help you begin to think about what you think makes for a good story.
- 4. Complete two story generation writing exercises View and Discuss These writing exercises will help you come up with ideas for your story.
- 5. Bonus Optional Task - Create a story generation writing exercise of your own View and Discuss Help provide others with writing exercises that don't have to be purchased in a text.
- 6. Study how your selected story begins View and Discuss This will help you think about how to begin your own story.
- 7. Draw some examples out of your selected story View and Discuss These examples will provide others studying here with material to use in tOFP tasks.
- 8. Write your definition of a good short story View and Discuss Look back at the responses to the first task in the challenge and create your own concise definition of a good short story
- 9. Begin writing your own short story. View and Discuss Look back at the writng exercises you've done so far. Take your best idea, and go with it.
