The session today about the MacArthur grants for badges and research was really sensational! The ideas were at least as exciting as the competition. There were at least 8 speakers plus a panel discussion.
A replay will be available eventually.
Mozilla and MacArthur emphasized that this is an international competition.
Stages of the badges competitions $10,000 to $200,000
* Call for content
* Call for badge design (sets or systems)
* Matchmaking between content and design winners - one month of collaboration off-line and then a 2-day f2f including a pitch
All must be part of the Mozilla badge infrastructure or interoperable with it: See http://www.dmlcompetition.net
Research competition $5000 to $80,000: Interest-driven learning
Not everyone loves the idea of badges: the panel moderator summarized these objections that showed up in tweets as "trivializing education" and "a badge for everything including showing up". See #dmlbadges

I've added a bunch of links to the Diigo group about Open Badges here: http://groups.diigo.com/group/open-badges-and-assessment
(the link is also at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar)

Apologies for not being as active here as I intended over the last couple of weeks. I'm submitting my doctoral thesis in about 10 days time... :-/
Today (Thursday 15th September 2011) is an important day for Mozilla's Open Badges project as they're announcing, along with the MacArthur Foundation, US Dept. of Education, NASA, etc. $2 million of grants for innovation in badges. The livestream starts at 9am EDT (which is 2pm BST by my reckoning)
Will YOU be applying?
-
I certianly will, but I'm still not entirely clear as to what kinds of projects qualify. I wish I could make the livestream but I'm busy today. Maybe they'll have more info after the announcement.
-
I wondered that, too. Are international bids acceptable, for example? I'm soon all will become clear!

Looks like all the info is up here:

Since I'm looking at implementing badges in my class that starts Jan 2012, it looks like the timeline will be pretty tight. I hope they still consider our project.
